Wednesday, August 10, 2016: Depart Bear Drop Anchorage for Blind River Marina

The town of Blind River, not so long ago, was the largest convertor of white pine trees to lumber in all of North America. Just before Christmas of 2008, when the housing starts came to a stand-still, the huge operation here in Blind River closed its doors with little or no warning. This marina now occupies the waterfront property where huge barges were loaded with timbers and lumber. A tall silo-like incinerator that once burned up the left-overs is all that remains of the industry that supported this wide-reaching area. This sad story is so familiar. The paper industry in our neck of the woods in Maine has fallen on hard times and most of the mills that were productive for over a hundred years are now closed and being dismantled. Canadians and Americans have a lot of history in common, a lot of it quite sad.
