Sun.-Mon. August 14 &15, 2016 Straits of Mackinaw to Beaver Island; Lake Michigan

It was awesome to pass under the famed 5-mile long Mackinac Bridge with its soaring towers and miles of suspension cables. It is the only bridge connecting Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. The open water we cruised through felt like the Maine coast waters... minus the icy salt spray, the tides and the pot bouys.

Five hours later we found ourselves docking at Beaver Island, a crossroads port of call. History shows numerous setters have had “their go” here. First came the Ojibwe tribe, sharing the island with trappers, traders and fishermen. By 1848, a break-off Latter Day Saints (Mormon) movement populated the island. When they were forcibly removed in1856 by a mob of non-Mormons from the mainland, Gaelic-speaking Irish fishermen emigrated from County Donegal to fill the void. We started today off right at Dalwhinnie’s Bakery and Deli. The nearby Shamrock Restaurant and Pub may see us “belly up to the bar” tonight for supper!
