Solomon's Island May 17-18, 2016
To get to Solomons Island, we made another 5 hour crossing of the Chesapeake and touched land just above the Potomac River. Solomons Island, Maryland along with Deltaville, Virginia are synonymous with the Chesapeake Bay. Now we know why. Both towns have more boats per square inch than any harbor town we’ve ever seen so far. Incredible! One of the “must see” stops in Solomons Island is the Calvert Marine Museum. We dinghied over from the Calvert Marina. Housed inside the museum is a fossil collection from the nearby Calvert Cliffs. Based on these fossils, a replica of a giant extinct white shark from the Miocene Epoche, 10 to 20 million years ago, swims high above the fascinating natural history section. Give yourself plenty of browsing time to digest the other sections inside... the region’s maritime, cultural and naval past. Then venture outside where the relocated cottage-style screwpile lighthouse is waiting for you to climb up...and up... and up. Don’t miss the outhouse clinging to the outside edge. The nearby Small Craft Building houses many great examples of work boats indigenous to the area. We happened to be there on “National Museum Day” so admission was free.
